Shanmugam Thoppalan
Ir. Shanmugam Thoppalan is the Head of the Grid System Operator (GSO) for Peninsular Malaysia, with over eight years of leadership in real-time power system operations at the national level. He is responsible for ensuring the secure, reliable and economically efficient operation of the power system, balancing evolving generation mixes with growing demand and system complexity.
He plays a critical role at the intersection of power and fuel security, overseeing grid operations in an environment increasingly influenced by gas supply dynamics, renewable energy integration, and tightening reserve margins. His leadership focuses on maintaining system stability while enabling the transition towards a lower-carbon energy mix, including the integration of large-scale solar, battery storage and cross-border electricity trade.
At the regional level, he serves as Lead Technical for the Laos–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore (LTMS) Technical Working Committee where he supports cross-border power exchange initiatives and contributes to advancing the ASEAN Power Grid.
With deep operational experience and a strong track record in managing critical system events, Ir. Shanmugam brings a practical system operator’s perspective to energy transition discussions—highlighting the importance of reliability, flexibility and coordinated planning across energy ecosystems.
