Maximising Power Output- A Smarter Approach to Cooling

Maximising Power Output- A Smarter Approach to Cooling

Cooling systems play a crucial role in maximising generation output, but traditional methods often struggle in extreme conditions.

Thomas Mee, CEO of Mee Industries, offers a smarter approach. By atomising water into ultra-fine droplets, these systems optimise air intake for gas turbines, improving power output and fuel efficiency.  Beyond power plants, this innovative cooling method is also used in data centres, industrial facilities, and even Hollywood special effects.

A Key Solution for Southeast Asia's Climate

With over 1,100 installations worldwide, including many in Southeast Asia, Mee Industries has found success in tackling one of the region's biggest energy challenges: heat and humidity.

Traditional cooling systems often struggle in Southeast Asia's hot afternoons, but Mee's fogging systems thrive due to minimal inlet air pressure drop, making them an effective evaporative cooling solution.

"On a typical summer day, our systems can cool about 10°C, boosting gas turbine power output by about 8% and improving fuel economy by 1.7%," Mee explained. "That fuel economy number is a big deal when you consider how much a gas turbine burns in a year."

The Power of Wet Compression

Mee also highlighted wet compression technology, which offers an even more impressive performance boost. By spraying water directly into the compressor, the system leverages the heat of compression to cool the compressor itself. This intercooling effect reduces the work needed for compression, allowing more power to be generated with better fuel efficiency.

"With just 1% of the air mass flow injected as liquid water, we can achieve an 8-10% power boost, regardless of ambient humidity. That makes it ideal for Southeast Asia's high-humidity environment," said Mee.

Connect with Mee Industries at Enlit Asia 2025

As Mee Industries continues to bring innovative solutions to the table, Thomas Mee is looking forward to connecting with gas turbine operators and decision-makers at Enlit Asia 2025, happening in Bangkok on 9-11 September 2025.

"We're eager to meet with upper-level management and anyone interested in generating more power while spending less to do it. Our systems cost about one-tenth the price of adding new capacity with a gas turbine," he added.

With a focus on practical, cost-effective solutions, Mee Industries is set to contribute valuable insights to the ongoing conversation about Southeast Asia's energy future.
