TNB and Hotel Casuarina@Meru Drive Perak’s Green Mobility Vision

TNB and Hotel Casuarina@Meru Drive Perak’s Green Mobility Vision

2 May 2025 - Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Casuarina Meru Sdn. Bhd. (CMSB) today formalised a strategic partnership agreement to install electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities at Hotel Casuarina@Meru, Ipoh, in a move that advances Perak’s journey towards a low-carbon future.

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between TNB and CMSB, a subsidiary of Perak Corporation Berhad, was officially exchanged at a ceremony officiated by Perak Menteri Besar, Dato’ Seri Saarani Mohamad in Hotel Casuarina@Meru. Also present was TNB President/CEO, Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan.

Representing TNB in the document exchange ceremony was its Strategy & Ventures Officer, Ir. Dr. Mohd Fadzil Mohd Siam, while CMSB was represented by its General Manager, Puan Sabrina Ahmad Tah.

The collaboration is in line with the state’s Perak Sejahtera 2030 vision and aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) to accelerate EV adoption nationwide. It also reinforces TNB’s role as a key enabler of Malaysia’s green energy transition by supporting the development of a reliable, accessible and future-ready EV ecosystem in line with the NETR’s long-term goals.

Under the partnership, TNB will install one (1) 120kW DC fast charger with dual CCS2 nozzles and two (2) 22kW AC chargers at Hotel Casuarina@Meru. These facilities will offer 24-hour access, dedicated EV parking bays, and mobile payment options — delivering seamless charging for hotel guests and public users.

“This collaboration represents a smart synergy between the national utility company and the state’s hospitality sector,” said Megat Jalaluddin. “It benefits the people, supports local economic growth, and drives the state’s green agenda. TNB truly values the trust placed by the Perak state government and is committed to supporting the Perak Sejahtera 2030 vision as a long-term strategic partner.”

Through its TNB Electron brand, TNB is rapidly expanding its EV charging network across highways, commercial hubs, and prominent tourist destinations. As of April 2025, 80 charging points have been installed across Peninsular Malaysia, with continued rollouts to support the growing demand for sustainable mobility.

In Perak TNB is actively expanding its EV charging infrastructure, aiming for 53 charging points across 20 locations. To date, TNB has established 12 charging points at 6 key locations, including R&R Tapah, Gunung Semanggol, and AEON malls in Taiping, Manjung and Kinta City. The installation at Hotel Casuarina@Meru represents a significant milestone as TNB first charger at a hotel.

Looking ahead, TNB and Perak Corporation Berhad have identified at least 10 more potential locations across the state for future EV infrastructure development. The new EV charging facilities are expected to be operational by Q3 2025, further strengthening Perak’s green mobility network and enhancing its appeal as an eco-friendly tourism destination.

Nationwide, TNB is also partnering with:

  • Local councils, including Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh (MBI) and Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri (MBIP), as well as Perodua to drive EV infrastructure growth and adoption at public and community levels;
  • PLUS Malaysia, AEON Mall, BHPetrol, and Petron Malaysia to expand fast-charging access along highways, urban centres and East Coast routes such as Petron Selising (Kelantan) and Kampung Gemuroh (Terengganu);

Through these initiatives, TNB is helping operationalise the NETR’s vision of a resilient, future-proof EV ecosystem that benefits all Malaysians.

“Our strategy is inclusive. We want to ensure that EV access is widely available in the country and benefits everyone,” added Megat Jalaluddin. “This partnership is a model for how smart collaborations can stimulate tourism, revitalise local communities and promote sustainable lifestyle.”
