Maintaining maximum efficiency and availability of Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) is becoming increasingly important as combined-cycle power plants are required to operate more flexibly while meeting demanding efficiency and emission targets. Fouling caused by ash, slag, iron oxide, sulphur compounds, and ammonia salts reduces heat transfer, increases gas-side pressure losses and turbine backpressure, and shortens operating intervals between outages. To address these challenges, Bang&Clean Technologies has developed a HRSG cleaning concept based on its patented PressureWave+™ technology, providing a safe and efficient solution for power plants worldwide.

 

How does it work?

PressureWave+™ is a mobile pressure-wave cleaning system that uses targeted and controlled gas explosions to generate pressure waves capable of penetrating deep into heat exchanger tube bundles. Unlike conventional cleaning methods, the pressure waves remove deposits throughout the entire module, creating a true deep-cleaning effect while remaining safe for both people and boiler. The technology has been successfully applied to horizontal and vertical HRSGs as well as coal-fired boilers, waste-to-energy plants, biomass facilities, refineries, smelters, cement plants and other industrial installations, with its safety confirmed by EPRI and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences.

Particular attention is given to HRSGs affected by sulphur and ammonia salt deposits, which are commonly encountered in Asia and the Middle East. Since these hygroscopic deposits become difficult to remove once exposed to moisture, PressureWave+™ enables cleaning without the risk of the deposits becoming wet in the first place. When the boiler is equipped with the necessary access nozzles, cleaning can be performed from the outside at an internal gas path temperature of approximately 120°C, keeping the deposits dry. If the deposits have already been exposed to moisture, Bang&Clean’s bypass heating concept provides an effective solution by drying them prior to cleaning.

 

A Tailored Cleaning Concept

After an initial plant assessment and boiler data analysis, a tailored cleaning concept is developed based on plant-specific operating conditions and performance objectives. Typical project goals include improving heat transfer, reducing turbine backpressure towards design conditions, improving plant efficiency, extending the time between revisions, or increasing plant availability.
