PT HDF Energy Indonesia joins forces with PT Krakatau Chandra Energi and PT Air Liquide Indonesia to Unlock Sustainable Power from Industrial Hydrogen By-Products

Jakarta, June 18, 2025 —PT HDF Energy Indonesia, a subsidiary of Hydrogène de France SA, a leading developer of hydrogen infrastructure and fuel cell systems, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PT Krakatau Chandra Energi and PT Air Liquide Indonesia to jointly develop HyPower, HDF’s hydrogen-to-power facility concept, utilizing hydrogen by-products from industrial operations. The collaboration will kick off with a feasibility study to assess the deployment of HDF’s HyPower multi-megawatt fuel cell power plants, designed to convert industrial excess hydrogen into reliable and low-emission electricity. The agreement was formalized during the Indonesia Future Energy and Grid Summit in Jakarta, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing sustainable innovative energy solutions and accelerating the decarbonization of Indonesia’s industrial sector.

This strategic MoU aims to assess the feasibility of harnessing hydrogen by-products from offgas within Cilegon Industrial Estate as a sustainable source for power generation. These hydrogen-rich offgases, sourced from refinery and petrochemical industries, are often flared, resulting in wasted energy and unnecessary emissions. By integrating HDF’s HyPower solution and advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology, this initiative represents a pioneering step towards converting industrial offgas into 1sustainable, non-intermittent electricity, thereby setting a compelling precedent for the role of hydrogen in the broader decarbonization of Indonesia's industrial sector.

Beyond enabling low-emission energy production, Hypower improves resource efficiency and helps mitigate the environmental impact of flaring—contributing to significant carbon footprint reduction across industrial operations in KIEC. This project directly supports Indonesia’s renewable energy ambitions and the national commitment to reach net-zero emissions.

The feasibility study will examine the technical, economic, and operational dimensions required to validate and scale this innovative solution. Insights from this study will serve as a blueprint for future HyPower deployments in Indonesia’s industrial landscape and beyond.

Mathieu Geze, President Director of PT HDF Energy Indonesia, said: "This cross-sector collaboration underscores the vital role of industrial partnerships in accelerating energy transition efforts in Indonesia. By transforming industrial offgas into clean electricity through HDF’s HyPower solution and fuel cell technology, we are not only reducing emissions but also unlocking new value from existing resources. Together with our partners, we aim to prove that hydrogen-based solutions are not just viable—they are essential for building a low-carbon, energy-resilient future.”

Harry M Tamin, Business Development Director of PT Krakatau Chandra Energi, said: “This MoU signing is a strategic move for KCE, underlining our commitment to the national energy transition and industrial sustainability," said Harry M. Tamin, Director of Finance, HR, and Business Development at PT Krakatau Chandra Energi. "We are excited to collaborate with global partners, Air Liquide and HDF Energy to bring the first hydrogen-fueled power plant in Cilegon Industrial Estate. We expect this project to sustainably power our industrial area and become a blueprint for industrial decarbonization throughout Indonesia.”

Maulana Himawan, Large Industries Commercial Director of PT Air Liquide Indonesia, said: "This joint study aims to explore co-creation and utilization of hydrogen that can unlock significant potential for hydrogen as clean energy source and industrial source."
