KHNP of South Korea and EGAT join hands to study SMR technology in support of clean energy transition

June 11, 2025 - KHNP of South Korea and EGAT signed an MOU to study and exchange SMR technology as well as develop guidelines for human resource development to support the clean energy transition.

On June 10, 2025, Mr. Park Insik, Executive Vice President, Overseas Business Division of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP) from South Korea, and Mr. Thidade Eiamsai, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on nuclear power plant technology. Executives from both organizations witnessed the event held at EGAT Headquarters, Nonthaburi Province.

Mr. Park Insik, Executive Vice President, Overseas Business Division of KHNP, revealed that South Korea and Thailand have maintained long-standing cooperation in various areas, including nuclear safety and human resource development. In particular, the “Cooperation Agreement on the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy” signed between the two governments in March this year has established a framework for collaboration and marked a significant turning point in nuclear cooperation between the two countries. It has led to the collaboration to turn intention into action between EGAT — Thailand's leader in clean energy transition — and KHNP, the world's third-largest nuclear power operator with more than 50 years of experience. Many countries around the world are beginning to recognize Small Modular Reactor (SMR) as a flexible and practical solution for energy transition, as it is environmentally friendly and provides energy security.

Mr. Thidade Eiamsai, Deputy Governor – Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy of EGAT, added that the revised Power Development Plan (PDP) highlights the need to diversify the energy sources and increase the share of clean energy. This MOU is an important step towards Thailand's clean energy future and also plays a part in achieving both EGAT's and Thailand's goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2050. The focus is on the study of SMRs which are well-suited to Thailand's energy landscape. EGAT has been preparing for the energy transition continuously and is currently conducting preliminary feasibility studies.

Both organizations will jointly study and exchange essential technical knowledge on SMR technology in order to assess its feasibility for future projects, share energy-related experiences and best practices, as well as develop guidelines for human resource development to support future projects, such as training programs, site visits, and other technical collaborations.
