EGAT drives Thailand’s nuclear energy future through “SMR School,” promoting knowledge, energy security, and carbon reduction

EGAT co-hosted the regional “SMR School” workshop to promote knowledge exchange on next-generation nuclear technology, emphasizing its readiness to accelerate SMR development as part of Thailand’s clean energy future.

On July 23, 2025, Mr. Siriwat Chedsi, Assistant Governor – Power Plant Engineering and Construction of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), attended the opening ceremony of “Small Modular Reactor School: Interregional Workshop on Key Aspects of SMR Development and Deployment” and delivered opening remarks together with Mr. Veerapat Kiatfuengfoo, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Energy; Dr. Rungrueng Kitphati, Secretary General of the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP); Dr. Buranin Rattanasombat, Chief New Business and Sustainability Officer of PTT Public Co., Ltd.; Mr. Sirimet Leepagorn, President and Acting Chief Operating Officer of Global Power Synergy Public Co., Ltd.; and Mr. Liu Hua, Deputy Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Representatives from 11 member countries participated in the event at the Main Conference, 2nd Floor, Building 1, the Office of Atoms for Peace.

Mr. Siriwat Chedsi, EGAT Assistant Governor, said that power systems around the world, including in Thailand, are currently facing challenges, such as supplying sufficient electricity to meet growing demand at a reasonable price and in an environmentally friendly manner, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for achieving Carbon Neutrality. While renewable energy still has limitations, Small Modular Reactor (SMR) offers a promising solution. This small, modern technology is safer and flexible for installation in various locations. Most importantly, it is a clean energy without greenhouse gas emissions, supporting the goals of sustainable development and long-term energy security. As the state enterprise responsible for power system security, EGAT has been continuously preparing for the development of nuclear power plants in all dimensions. Currently, a pre-feasibility study is being conducted to identify potential locations, evaluate suitable technologies, and develop human resources. Moreover, there are collaborations with international partners and SMR technology developers in technical, financial, and procedural aspects with consideration of safety regulations and public acceptance. EGAT is committed to developing the project with transparency through domestic and international collaborations to ensure that every step aligns with international standards.

The “SMR School” workshop was held from July 21 to 25, 2025 at Asawin Grand Convention Hotel, Bangkok. It was organized by OAP in collaboration with IAEA and co-hosted by EGAT. The workshop was a forum for IAEA member countries to share experiences in various areas, such as engineering, power plant design, safety systems, licensing processes, public engagement, and SMR project development—from early-stage planning to actual deployment. The insights gained from this workshop will be highly beneficial for guiding the future development of SMR technology in Thailand.
