Designed and manufactured in Melbourne, EFD™ uses patented radio frequency technology to continuously monitor both overhead and underground of electrical transmission and distribution networks. The system enables early detection of faults and pinpoints issue locations with an accuracy of 10m. It can identify a wide range of defects—including vegetation encroachment, broken conductor strands, tracking insulators, high impedance faults, clashing lines, broken tie wires, tracking fuses, insulator failures, fallen trees, ageing transformers, and faulty lightning arrestors—before they develop into critical failures.
Currently, more than 15,000 EFD™ units are deployed across over 15 major Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs) and several cooperatives in North America, where they support wildfire mitigation strategies and regulatory reporting. Additionally, EFD™ helps optimize operating expenditure by digitizing inspections and only deploying inspection crews when known issues exist and then grouping known issues in the same area, with one customer reporting annual savings of $9.2 million. Initially implemented in Australia and New Zealand, EFD™ has since expanded its presence globally, now serving customers in North America, Europe, and Asia. Today, it plays a critical role in reducing powerline-initiated wildfires, improving network reliability, and enhancing community safety.
