Ultra High Performance Static Classifier
Coal fineness and pipe-to-pipe fuel balance set heat rate, carbon in ash and NOx. EnFloTech's patented Ultra-High-Performance Static Classifier (UHPSC) is a modular retrofit for vertical spindle and ball mills, fitting the existing mill top mounting flange. Guaranteed: 75% passing 75 micron, a minimum 10% improvement in mill performance, and pulverised fuel (PF) distribution within 10% pipe to pipe. Converted in under 70 working hours, with a 10-year guarantee.
The boiler only ever sees what the classifier lets through
Heat rate, carbon in ash, NOx and flame stability are decided upstream of the furnace by two things: pulverised fuel (PF) fineness, and how evenly it is split between the burner pipes. Get either wrong and the consequences are familiar across the region — unburnt carbon in ash, uneven burner loading, restricted low-load operation and a Low NOx system that cannot be held within its design envelope. Across ASEAN, a young coal fleet is now being asked to cycle, follow load and meet tightening emissions limits on variable fuel. That demand lands on the mill.
The EnFloTech Ultra-High-Performance Static Classifier
The UHPSC is a patented, modular classifier conversion fitted to the existing mill top mounting flange. It requires no major structural modification and no change to the mill footprint. A conversion is completed in no more than 70 working hours, placing it within a normal outage window rather than a capital project cycle.
Guaranteed performance
- 75% passing a 75 micrometre mesh
- Minimum 10% improvement in mill performance (throughput or fineness)
- PF distribution within 10% pipe to pipe
- 10-year guarantee on the conversion
What that delivers to the boiler
- Reduced carbon in ash while holding Low NOx operation
- Mill operation within the boiler's Low NOx envelope
- Stable boiler firing and consistent burner loading
- Elimination of particle roping in fuel pipes
- Elimination of particle settling and large-particle carry-over in fuel pipes
- NFPA 85 compliance
- Reduced classifier system resistance, taken either as increased mill throughput or as a finer particle size distribution at unchanged throughput
The engineering behind it
Once even primary classification has been achieved within the grinding zone, it is secondary classification that determines whether the product leaving the mill meets boiler specification. The difficulty is that most milling plants sit in a space-constrained buildings that will not accommodate a classifier designed to first-principal calculations. Rather than demand space that does not exist, the UHPSC manipulates the air flow to achieve equivalent classification behaviour within the available envelope — an approach developed over two decades of coal mill aerodynamics work and proven on installations worldwide.
Vane options include pre-swirler, adjustable and cyclone types, with single-point vane setting so operators can trim fineness without entering the mill.
Working with the throat
A classifier can only sort what the throat delivers to it. Where the grinding zone is fed by poorly conditioned air, the classifier is asked to correct a problem created below it. EnFloTech's High-Performance Rotating Throats condition the inlet aerodynamics so that classification begins from evenly distributed, streamlined flow. Applied together, the two modular components address the mill's inlet and outlet aerodynamics as one system and deliver a combined improvement in mill efficiency of approximately 20%.
Applicability
Vertical spindle mills: Babcock E and EL type, MPS, Loesche, MBF, Foster Wheeler, XRP, CE, HP, Raymond bowl, Lopulco and MB. Ball and tube mills: Kennedy van Saun (Metso), Riley, Stein Industrie and Mitchell.
Why it matters for the region
Emissions compliance and load-following capability are increasingly what determines whether an existing coal unit remains dispatchable. The UHPSC delivers both from within the current mill footprint, in a single short outage, with performance guaranteed in writing — extending the compliant, flexible operating life of assets already built.
