TECNALIA will present its latest smart grid technologies at the energy sector’s leading European Fair, to be hosted in Bilbao for the first time
TECNALIA will bring to the Fair its latest developments in services to accelerate the introduction of new technologies in the market, helping the digital transformation of the energy system. The technology centre, which will share a stand with the Basque Energy Cluster (C70), will showcase its solutions in areas such as digitalisation, cybersecurity, energy storage, flexibility of distributed resources, energy planning and automated inspection of installations. It will also showcase its comprehensive testing services platform to evaluate the functionality, cybersecurity and interoperability of smart grid equipment, as well as the certification of communication protocols, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), metrology (MID Directive) and durability tests.
Bilbao, 14th November 2025. The TECNALIA research and technological development centre will be participating in the energy sector’s leading strategic forum, ENLIT EUROPE 2025, which will be held for the first time in Bilbao this year from 18th to 20th November. This is Europe's leading fair in the field of smart grids and is expected to bring more than 15,000 attendees and more than 700 exhibiting companies from all over the world to the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC).

Demonstrations on the stand

Over the three days of the Fair, TECNALIA will also participate in different sessions and debate forums on cybersecurity, smart metering, provision of flexibility, optimisation of energy planning and intelligence for grid operation.

Furthermore, people and companies visiting the TECNALIA stand will be able to attend various demonstrations in which they will be able to:

- See the automated test laboratory for testing primary substation equipment and the AMI system (Advanced Measurement Infrastructure) using virtualised data models. With a dual purpose, on the one hand to demonstrate the advantages of virtualising (at the data model level) the equipment, enabling innovative communication tests to be carried out between equipment for both the AMI system and the electrical substation, incorporating new metrics for flexibility. And on the other hand, to demonstrate the advantages of automation to ensure the incorporation of cyber-secure equipment in the electricity distribution grid.

- Witness how functionality, communications, interoperability and cybersecurity tests are carried out in the laboratory, complying with the strictest directives and standards and the highest levels of security.

- Observe the operation of a Smart Grid cybersecurity laboratory, which provides a secure and controlled environment in which to carry out cybersecurity tests that cannot be carried out on a real installation, reproducing the equipment of a substation connected to a control room. Witness how cybersecurity assurance tests are carried out in the laboratory, complying with the most demanding directives and standards and the highest levels of security (CRA, IEC 62443).

- Find out about solutions that help manufacturers and operators to comply with international cybersecurity regulations, such as solutions aimed at the design of cyber resilient embedded systems, cryptography, identity and digital certificate management, vulnerability management, intrusion detection and incident response, etc.

- Test the benefits of harnessing flexibility, using digital tools to enable active participation in markets. More specifically, it will be possible to interact with FLEXY, a tool that optimises the use of flexibility, whether at the individual prosumer level (from large industrial prosumers (producer-consumer) to small domestic consumers), at the energy community level or for the aggregation of different types of distributed resources.

- See the BATTWIN digital twin, a tool for the operation and maintenance of energy storage systems that estimates battery status, optimises battery life and facilitates the integration of renewable energies.

- Explore how the integration of advanced energy models, artificial intelligence and geo-referenced data enables the challenges of decarbonisation to be analysed and anticipated at different levels - building sector, energy infrastructures, industry and regional contexts - and how these solutions can be used by energy companies, industry and public administrations for strategic decision-making.

- Discover automated inspection technologies based on drones and deep learning algorithms for the diagnosis and maintenance of energy infrastructures. These technologies can automatically detect anomalies and hot spots in the network, improve data accuracy, reduce operational risks and eliminate CO emissions associated with traditional methods, such as helicopters.

R&D and Innovation for the future of electricity grids

TECNALIA will also present its R&D and innovation activities and projects for companies and manufacturers of electrical equipment, analysis, modelling and simulation of electrical systems, applications to optimise the planning, operation, maintenance and management of energy in electricity grids, cyber-safe electronic solutions and products for power grids and tools and power converters for the integration of distributed energy resources into the grid.
