Powering Industry and Decarbonisation

Across ASEAN, industrial expansion is rapidly increasing electricity demand. Nickel processing, critical minerals, battery materials, metals manufacturing, and large industrial parks are placing new pressure on power systems to deliver reliable capacity at scale. For these critical sectors, electricity is not simply an operational input. Power availability, reliability, and cost directly influence production stability, investment decisions, and export competitiveness.

Powering Industries and Decarbonisation stream examines how power systems can support industrial growth while lowering carbon intensity over time. Discussions explore how utilities, developers, and industrial operators are managing power delivery through captive generation, hybrid systems, grid expansion, and firm clean power solutions.

Featured: Nickel Power Forum

Nickel has become one of the most energy intensive and strategically important industries in Indonesia. As global demand for batteries and electric vehicles increases, Indonesia’s nickel processing sector is expanding rapidly through large scale smelting and refining operations.

These facilities require continuous and highly reliable electricity supply. Even short interruptions can disrupt processing and damage equipment. For this reason, many operations rely on captive generation, including mine mouth coal plants, to ensure stable power. At the same time, pressure is growing to reduce the carbon intensity of nickel production. The sector is now exploring how power supply models may evolve through hybrid systems, gas infrastructure, grid expansion, renewable integration, and firm clean power sources such as hydro and geothermal.

The Nickel Power Forum provides a focused discussion on how the sector can secure reliable power while navigating long term decarbonisation expectations.

Key Takeaways:

  • Insight into how nickel operations can secure fast, firm, and reliable power

  • Better understanding of how electricity cost directly shapes nickel competitiveness

  • Realistic view of which lower carbon pathways are actually available to nickel clusters

  • Greater clarity on the difference between on grid and off grid transition models

Who Attends:

  • Nickel producers and smelter operators

  • Owners and operators of captive power serving nickel sites

  • Utility planners, and network developers serving industrial clusters

  • Gas, LNG, storage, hydro, geothermal, and hybrid solution providers

  • Industrial cluster developers in Sulawesi and Maluku Utara

  • Policymakers and regulators

  • Investors and lenders focused on industrial infrastructure

  • Battery and EV supply chain strategists
